10 Quick Tips for K-12 Peer Tutoring Success by the PTRC's 2016 Contestants | Meet the Winners

Last December, the Peer Tutoring Resource Center hosted its second giveaway contest in honor of k-12 peer tutoring practitioners. We’re very proud of the educators who participated and shared valuable tips about implementing a successful peer tutoring program.

A hearty congrats once again to the following winners:

  • Grand prize winner of $200 Target gift card: Kristen Johnson, School Psychologist at West Cary Middle School, NC.
  • Second place winner of $100 Target gift card: Karlee English, Special Education Teacher at Hillcrest Jr. High, Murray UT.
  • Third place winner of $50 Target gift card: Teresa Mares, Library Media Teacher at Moreno Valley High School, Moreno Valley CA.
  • Consolation prize winner of $25 Target gift card for first contest entry: Michele Hodson, Intervention Specialist at Valley View Junior High, Famersville OH.

A special thank you to all of the educators who took the time to enter this contest. As part of their contest entry, participants gave really helpful tips on achieving peer tutoring program success. Here are a few :

  1. Adequate training of students is a must
  2. Educate tutors on how peer tutoring benefits them and their tutees
  3. Clearly communicate expectations for the program to all stakeholders involved when setting up a new program. This includes students, teachers, parents, advisors and administration
  4. Start small if it’s your first time implementing peer tutoring
  5. Target the right students to participate. Do not underestimate the importance of tutor vetting
  6. Improve the social and emotional skills of students
  7. Identify students’ strengths and weaknesses to better match tutors and tutees
  8. Reward peer tutors. For example, award certificates
  9. Create a caring and welcoming environment. This sets participating students up for success
  10. Allow sufficient time for modeling tutoring skills and provide consistent constructive feedback to both tutors and tutees
