Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) Model - PALS is a same-age model where the teacher identifies and pairs children who require help with specific skills ("players") with children who are the most appropriate to help other children learn those skills ("coaches"). The pairs of students are changed regularly, and over a period of time students work on a variety of skills so that all students have the opportunity to be "coaches" and "players". The pals strategy includes a 25- to 35- minute math or reading activity implemented two to four times a week. Get more information about PALS.
Class Wide Peer Tutoring (CWPT) Model - CWPT is a reciprocal, same-age model that pairs students within a class who alternately take on the role of coach and learner. These dyads work on math or language arts tasks structured by the teacher. Each pair belongs to a class team and scores points for their team by giving correct answers during the tutoring sessions. Effective class- wide peer tutoring typically occurs for 30 minutes four days a week. Get more information about CWPT.

Cross-Age Model - This model pairs older students with younger students to work on a variety of content area skills, frequently those involving literacy. Students are typically paired within a school (elementary), but also across schools (high school and middle school with elementary). This model may be employed between once and three times a week, either during a class period or in an after school program.
