Below is a special announcement from the Secondary School Writing Centers Association.

Secondary School Writing Centers Association annual conference will take place from Friday, March 13 through Saturday, March 20, 2021. Due to the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, SSWCA 2021 will be a virtual conference this March. We are excited about the possibilities this offers to our community, especially those who have been unable to participate in the past due to travel or budgetary restrictions.

We invite everyone with experience or a stake in secondary school peer tutoring to participate in our virtual conference: middle school, high school, and post-secondary tutors, directors, and administrators.

What to Expect

Here is an overview of what to expect at #SSWCA2021:

  • Our keynote speaker is Dr. Alexandria Peary, NH Poet Laureate and mindfulness in writing expert. You may recognize her name from her recent NCTE workshops. Read more.
  • We are featuring 16 live Zoom presentations - 10 by tutors and 6 by directors - on a range of subjects including inclusivity, using music in the center, anxiety, and grading methodology among others.
  • We will have approximately 70 pre-recorded, asynchronous video presentations created by tutors from across the country that you can view throughout the week. Topics include virtual tutoring, tutor training, leadership, and more.
  • We will host both a director and tutor meet and greet, social Zoom for participants to network and enjoy the company of colleagues.

Registration

Our registration is now open. Non-members can register here on our website. The cost is $40 for each professional and $30 for each student (high school or university). Or, we invite you to become full SSWCA members at $55 per institution, which will allow everyone from your center to register for the conference for free. You can become a SSWCA member here on our website. All SSWCA member schools will have free access for all their directors and tutors to the 8-day virtual conference. We will be publishing dozens of tutor-created video presentations on topics that include training, outreach, diversity, all-subject centers, online tutoring, and more.

We hope you will join us for this energizing and content-rich week. Until then, be safe.
