Whether you’re looking for a simple activity for your students to use in reinforcing a particular math concept or ideas for an enriching class project, the following recently listed peer tutoring lesson plans allow you to take advantage of some of the benefits of peer tutoring techniques without having a full-fledged program.

Mathematics Peer Tutoring Activity for Grades 7 - 10

The is a partner review activity from Teachers Pay Teachers. Using reciprocal peer tutoring methods, students work in pairs to practice binomial multiplication. Student pairs are given different but similar worksheets with answers on the back. Partner A’s worksheet contains Partner B’s answers while Partner B’s worksheet contains Partner A’s answers. Working on one problem at a time, students give and receive immediate feedback by evaluating each other’s solutions.

Peer Tutoring Project for Grades 7 – 8

This lesson plan features a cross-age tutoring project in which older (middle grade) students tutor younger (elementary grade) students. This lesson plan from PleasanTech Academy Charter School NJ, was found on the website of Rutgers University Center for Social and Character Development. In this 10-week long project, middle school students who have been nominated by their teachers undergo training in order to teach math and language arts skills to elementary school students in grades 4 – 6.

As stated in the lesson plan, the central focus of the project is character education in which “students learn good citizenship, caring (empathy), respect, responsibility, trustworthiness and fairness.”

Some other components of the project include:

  • Reflection activities
  • Evaluation of the success of the program
  • A presentation given by the peer tutors
