Today we’re sharing two helpful peer tutoring articles by Dana Monaghan M.S., CCC-SLP of Teach Tutors. Dana is a public school educator and has coordinated a peer tutoring program that won a local “Striving for Excellence” award. She is also a self-published author of a tutor training manual and workbook (available at titled Building Student Success: A Training Workbook for Tutors and Instructional Aides.

The first article we're sharing from Teach Tutors - Creating a Successful Peer Tutoring Program: Peer Tutoring Tips, Strategies and Best Practices - provides guidelines for educators who wish to develop a peer tutoring program at their school and identifies and describes four key components to organizing a successful peer tutoring or cross-age tutoring program in a school setting. The four essential elements for program success discussed are:

  3. Criteria for selecting student tutors
  4. Providing quality training and on-going support to tutors

The article provides specific suggestions and addresses common questions that educators have about establishing a successful peer tutoring program and developing tutors who are effective.

Next is Benefits of Peer Tutoring & Cross-Age Tutoring: A Summary of the Research. This piece discusses the benefits of peer and cross-age tutoring to the students being tutored as well as to the students serving as tutors. It also identifies benefits of a tutoring program to teachers and schools.
