Tutor Training is Essential to a Successful Peer Tutoring Program

Tags :

The National Tutoring Association (NTA) has shared with us, some informative material on peer tutor training  which is now available in our resource library. The 5-page document explains the importance of properly training students to take on the roles of peer and cross-age tutors. The quality of training received by tutors is vital to the effectiveness of any peer tutoring program.

The document also includes recommended practices for tutorial effectiveness cited from the AmeriCorps Tutorial Outcomes Study (2001) which states that structured and ongoing tutor training is the key to the success of tutorial programs.

The National Tutoring Association suggests incorporating the following topics into a basic tutor training agenda:

  • Definition of tutoring
  • The role of the tutor
  • Ethics and etiquette in tutoring
  • Basic communication skills
  • Good listening practices
  • Basic study skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Recognizing success
